Lika Mutal, an Israeli-born, New York-based artist, specializes in working across the interstices of art categories. Most often, her work has to do with photography and video, but her images also explore the boundaries of two-dimensional and three-dimensional form. All have worked with the human figure using a varying degree of abstraction. Lika Mutal’s work is heavily inspired by her intimate relationship with the landscape, and with the spirit of the stone. It is these relationships that make her work so unique.

Synopsis: This in-depth exploration focuses on the imposing stone sculptures of the major contemporary artist Lika Mutal. Bringing to her sculpture the sensibilities of three cultures - the spirituality of the Peruvian Andes' Inca civilization, the rich artistic tradition of her native Holland and the dynamic vitality of New York City - Mutal articulates a distinctive vision that draws the viewer into her Edition: First Edition.
Through her combination of solid blocs of travertine, diorite and granite, Mutal builds structures made of two or more monoliths that refer to the universality of ageless stones. They represent the worlds and the energy of earth and water that are deeply embedded within us.
